The University of Delhi was established in 1922 as a unitary, teaching and residential university. The University of Delhi is the premier university of the country and is known for its high standards in teaching and research and attracts eminent scholars to its faculty. The University of Delhi South Campus conducts various teaching programmes under different faculties. Students joining courses such as English, Hindi, Philosophy, Sanskrit, Political Science, History, Commerce and Mathematics at the masters level, have the option to get themselves enrolled in the University, either through college or directly at the South Campus. Admission tests are held locally in Delhi for courses such as M.Tech and some M.Sc. Admissions for courses for which there are no admissions tests are made on the basis of graduation marks according to the eligibility categories and course requirements. In a given category, admissions are made on the basis of marks. One goes to the next category; only after all eligible candidates of the higher categories have been given admission. The University of Delhi caters to a very large student population. Besides its superb academic environment, the University of Delhi has many opportunities for the promotion of overall development of it students. The University has a very active and vibrant Sports program. The Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy for the best overall sports performance among Indian Universities has been won by the University of Delhi many times. The University campus has facilities for many sports including archery, cricket, basketball , swimming etc. Each college also has a sports programme and several of our students have been outstanding sportsmen at the National and International levels. Culture Council of the University of Delhi is active in promoting cultural activities in the University. Student governance is an important part of student life in the University of Delhi. The Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) is very active and elections are held every year where students from all the colleges and faculties choose their student representatives. Several of the DUSU office bearers have gone on to play an important part in national and state politics.
Apart from being the capital of India, Delhi is also the travel hub of northern India. It serves as an excellent base for visiting the colorful state of Rajasthan and Agra, the city of the Taj Mahal, is less than three hours away. Delhi is India's main entry point for overseas visitors, and has two airports, one international named Indira Gandhi International Airport and the other domestic named Palam airport.
For the benefit of students coming from different cities and states, the Delhi University runs eleven hostels with a large number of rooms. These hostels are typically available for post-graduate and research students. Apart from this,several colleges also have hostel facilities. List of Postgraduate Hostels in University of Delhi. 1. Jubilee Hall 8. Mansarover Hostel 9. Meghdoot Hostel 10. North Eastern Students House 11. Post-Graduate Men's Hostel 12. University Hostel for Women 13. V.K.R.V. Rao Hostel 14. WUS University Hostel Gwyer Hall is the oldest and most prestigeous Men's Hostel in the Delhi University. The Hall has now 76 single bed rooms and 12 rooms for double occupancy to accommodate 100 full-time postgraduate students and research scholars of the University. Gwyer Hall is equipped with a modern Kitchen, Gymnasium and has two big beautiful lawns. It also has a Canteen, run on contract basis. The Hall has a few Guest Rooms.The University Hostel for Women accommodates full time post-graduate women students of the main campus of University of Delhi. The total number of beds in the University Hostel for Women is 290. The University of Delhi provides several amenities for its staff and students convenience. There is a post office and a bank on campus for the use of the University community as well as the general public. The WUS Health Center provides comprehensive health services for the University Community. The Computer Center, the University Press and the University Science Instrumentation Center are some of the other facilities which can be used by the students and staff of the University. The University Guest House can be used by the University staff to house guests while the Coffee House provides a nice environment and delicious food.
