The University of Chicago (UChicago), established in 1890, is private coeducational research university that offers undergraduate and graduate degrees across many academic fields and specializations. More than 80 Nobel laureates, 16 percent of all recipients since the award was first given in 1901, have been associated with the University of Chicago, including Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar in Physics'83. The University is affiliated with 49 Rhodes Scholars, and 9 Fields Medalists.

UChicago maintains strong academic and cultural connections in India. India's Ministry of Culture made an unprecedented donation of $1.5 million to establish the Indian Ministry of Culture Vivekananda Visiting Professorship; Raghuram Rajan, a professor of finance at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business, is currently the Indian Government's Chief Economic Advisor; seven Indian languages are taught through the South Asian Languages and Civilizations department; and the South Asian Student Association (SASA) is one of the largest student organizations on-campus.

UChicago's historic main campus is located in the residential neighborhood of Hyde Park, just a short walk from the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan and seven miles from downtown Chicago, easily accessible by train, car, or scenic lakeside bike path.
