                                                The Publics Petition dated 11-11-1839 initiated the establishment of Madras University. It was in January 1840 with Mr.George Norton as its President, The University Board was constituted. In 1854 after a lapse of 14 years Government of India formulated a systematic educational policy for India and as a sequel to this on 5th September 1857 by an act of legislative council of India. The University of organised and the Model of London University.

Madras University is the mother of almost all the Old Universities of Southern India. The University area of Jurisdiction has been confined to, however, 3 districts of Tamil Nadu in recent years. This is consequent to establishment of various Universities in the State and demarcation of the University territories. This University has been growing from strength to strength while widening its teaching and research activities.

he University imparts both Under Graduate and Post Graduate Education to the Affiliated Institutions which are spread over the district of Chennai, Thiruvallur and Kanchipuram. Apart from teaching research activities in Arts, Humanities, Science, Management and Technology are the main portals at the University. A number of institutions affiliated to Madras University Concentrate in research activities were Ph.D., Programme is available in the respective specialisations.
University has also offer teaching and Research in 4 Campuses of Madras University. The University Department of study and Research which are 68 Departments spread over in 4 Campuses organised into 18 Schools offer Post Graduate Courses in respective specialisation part time and full time Ph.D. Programmes, Diploma and Certificate Programmes.
Accessing the need for educating large number of the people in the Country The University offered both under Graduate and Post Graduate education through the Institute of Correspondence Education of the University of Madras (MU). The Institute which is popularly called ICE of Madras offers courses both under Open University System and Regular formal University system. In recent years, The University by its quality education has been accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with the highest rating. The UGC has recognised as the first centre for potentials of excellence in the Country.

Trivia

    C. W. Thamotharampillai from Jaffna was the first graduate of the University of Madras. He, along with a fellow student from Jaffna, Daniel Caroll Vyramuttu Visuvanathapillai, were the only two who sat for the University's final B.A. exams in 1857, and both passed the exams to become the first graduates of the University of Madras. Thamotharampillai scored higher marks and was placed first, so is considered the first graduate of the University.

    Dr Muthulakshmi Reddi is the first Indian female (Alice Van Ingen from Ceylon is the first-ever woman) to get a Medical degree from University of Madras in 1912.

    Cadambi Minakshi became the first woman to get a doctorate from the University of Madras in 1936.

    Kamala Sathianathan is the first woman graduate (BA and MA) from Madras University, having for her bachelor's degree in 1909. She went on to become a noted journalist.
    A.L. Venkataramana Pantulu, M.A., B.L. is the first double graduate of the University of Madras.

    Sir S Subramania Iyer became the first recipient of an honorary degree from the University when he was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Law in 1908.

Grants

In 2011, the University Grants Commission selected the university as a university with potential for excellence, under which the university gets INR 250 million. The university had been selected under phase 1 of the scheme in 2001-02 along with a few other universities in the country. UGC has identified the school of geology and the school of zoology of the university as centres of excellence and has allotted INR 32.5 million each for their development. The university is planning to use the funds to buy equipment and improve infrastructure.
